Knowing What You Sleep On
Share
You have slept on the same mattress for years. You could describe how it feels, roughly, and how it has changed. You probably could not say what is inside it.
Almost nobody can. A mattress arrives closed and stays closed, and what is closed stops being a question. It becomes furniture, then it becomes tired, then it becomes something you replace. It is the largest object in the room and the surface a body spends about a third of its life against, and it is the one thing in the house you were never given a way into.
Ours opens. So the list below is the whole list, and it is short enough to read in a minute.
What the layers are
Most inexpensive mattresses are built from synthetic foam, a petroleum-derived material made in a factory. It is cheap to produce and it behaves predictably. It is also dense in a way that traps heat and holds damp, which is a poor match for a bedroom where overnight lows rarely fall below 24 degrees.
Latex is tapped from the rubber tree instead. The Mattress is three layers of GOLS certified organic latex, 29 cm in total, inside a taupe bamboo casing. The latex is open-celled, meaning its structure is full of interconnected pockets, so air moves through the body of the material rather than banking underneath you. The casing is bamboo rather than cotton because cotton soaks and then holds what it soaks. Hidden airflow channels sit at the shoulders, where the load is heaviest and where air would otherwise be pressed out.
That is close to the entire list. Three things, and you can look up every one of them.
The layer underneath the two you feel is the base, built in zones: firmer where the weight gathers at the hips, yielding where it does not. It comes as a single 180 cm block or as two 90 cm blocks set side by side, and that is a choice you make rather than a specification we hand you.
What holds it together
Nothing.
There is no adhesive anywhere in the construction, which matters most in a bedroom you cannot ventilate. The three layers are held by the precise fit of the casing and by the weight of the material itself. That is harder to make than a bonded stack, because friction and fit have to do the work the glue would otherwise do, and an imprecise cut has nothing to hide behind.
It is also the whole argument. A bonded mattress cannot be opened, so one softened layer condemns three that are still sound, and at the end of its life the materials cannot be separated from each other. Ours opens on an ordinary afternoon, by hand, without waiting for anyone. The layer that has gone soft lifts out and is replaced on its own. The layers can be reordered if what you want from the bed changes, firmer underneath after a year, softer at the top. The base stays. The rest of the bed stays.
Why the list is short on purpose
A short list is a checkable one, and that is the reason for publishing it rather than a paragraph about quality. Every material above is one you can name, look up, and ask us about. The latex is naturally hypoallergenic and dust-mite resistant, which is a property of the material rather than a promise about you.
None of this is visible from the outside, and that is the point. When there is nothing inside an object that needs concealing, the outside is free to be quiet.
So take your time with it. Open ours, compare it with whoever you like, and ask what anything is made of, including the things we have not mentioned. The alternative is the bed most people already own: something they have slept on for years and could not describe if you asked them tonight.
