A Mattress You Maintain, Not Replace

By the fifth year there is a shallow hollow under your hip. Two centimetres, maybe, visible only with the sheets off, and the rest of the bed is as good as the day it arrived. That is the night the mattress is finished, and it was finished years earlier by somebody you never met.
One layer has softened. Usually the comfort layer nearest the surface, the one doing the most work. The three underneath it are sound. In almost every mattress sold, none of that matters, because the layers were bonded to each other, and a bonded object has no serviceable parts.
What the glue decides for you
Adhesive is the default for good commercial reasons. Contact cement and hot melt bonding are quick, cheap at volume, and forgiving of imprecision: if two layers do not quite align, the glue closes the gap. That is a real advantage on a factory floor, and you pay for it later in three instalments.
The firmness is fixed. Whatever left the factory is what you sleep on for the life of the bed, however your body and your sleeping position change over the next decade.

And the materials cannot be separated. Bonded latex, foam and textile cannot be meaningfully sorted at the end, which is a large part of why a mattress is among the most awkward objects a household ever has to get rid of.

There is a chemical argument against adhesive as well, since solvent based glues are a known source of the volatile compounds behind that new mattress smell. It is a fair point and a well covered one. It is also the smaller half of the story.
Where a synthetic core gives way
The larger half is what happens to the material. Polyurethane memory foam breaks down by a route that is not in dispute: under continuous compression the cell walls progressively collapse, and heat and humidity speed that up. In a climate where relative humidity averages close to 84 percent, those are not marginal conditions. What follows is localised sagging, a loss of support exactly where the body is heaviest, and a surface that increasingly holds heat and moisture rather than letting them go.
Latex behaves differently, and not as a matter of grade or price. Its open-cell structure lets air move through the material rather than around it, and it returns to shape after compression instead of slowly keeping the impression of where you last slept. Moisture that cannot leave a mattress stays in it, and a material holding moisture degrades faster than one that releases it. In the tropics, breathability is a durability question before it is a comfort one.
Held by fit and by weight
The Mattress is assembled with no adhesive anywhere in it. Three layers of GOLS certified organic latex sit inside a taupe bamboo casing, held by the fit of that casing and by the weight of the material itself. The seven-zone base is specified one of two ways: a single 180 centimetre block for one continuous surface, or two 90 centimetre blocks side by side. Choose the pair and nothing is bonded between them, so one side of the bed can sit at a different comfort level from the other, and be rebalanced years later without disturbing the other half.
This is harder to build than a bonded stack, and the difficulty is the point. Friction and fit have to do the work the adhesive would have done, which leaves very little margin: latex density consistent from batch to batch, two blocks that meet cleanly down the centre line and stay there under a sleeper's weight, a casing cut to hold the whole stack still all night. There is nothing in the construction to absorb a mistake. That is a tolerance you hold by having made the material for a long time, which we have done since 2005.
What you can still change
The body does not stay the same. Across a long ownership weight shifts, injuries heal, sleeping positions change, and a bonded mattress can follow none of it, because its feel was set at the factory and cannot be revisited.
An unbonded stack can. The layers reorder if your preferred firmness moves. One side rebalances without touching the other. A single layer is replaced without discarding the rest: open the casing, exchange the layer, and the bed is whole again. At the end of a long life the materials come apart into what they were, instead of arriving at disposal as one mass.
Durability gets described as a property of materials. It is closer to a decision, taken early and quietly, about whether the object was built to be kept.
