One Firmness Rarely Fits a Bed

A desk holds you in one shape for nine or ten hours, and the lower back carries most of that stillness. By evening it has learned the posture of the day. Lying down is supposed to undo that, and a bed built as one even slab often just holds the shape in place for another eight hours.

The reason is not firmness. It is that the bed is evenly firm and you are not evenly heavy.

An even surface under an uneven body

Your hips and lower back are the densest part of you. On a surface that is one firmness from edge to edge, they sink first and furthest, and everything above and below them follows: the shoulders stay high, the middle drops, and the lumbar curve is pulled open and held there all night. For a back that is already tired from sitting, that slow drift is the whole difference between waking eased and waking sore.

The usual answer is to buy firmer. That trades one problem for the opposite one. A surface hard enough to stop the hips dropping is also hard enough to leave the shoulder and the hip carrying your weight on two small contact points, which is where a morning ache you did not earn comes from.

You are not evenly heavy.

Zones, and what each one resists

The alternative is to stop asking one firmness to do every job. The base of The Mattress is a 15 centimetre block built in seven zones, firmer where the weight gathers and more yielding where it does not, with two 5 centimetre comfort layers above it, 29 centimetres in total.

The firmer central zones are the ones doing the work for a desk-bound back. They resist the downward pull of the hips, so the lumbar curve is filled rather than folded, and the spine is carried level rather than propped at one end. The softer zones under the shoulder let it in, because a shoulder that cannot sink is a shoulder that takes the whole side of you on one point.

The material has to cooperate with that. Zoning a material that does not recover would give you seven zones for about a year.

Why it can be specified at all

The base comes two ways: a single 180 centimetre block, giving one continuous surface with no centre line, or two 90 centimetre blocks set side by side. Nothing is bonded between them, and nothing is bonded between the layers either. The stack is held by the fit of the taupe bamboo casing and by the weight of the latex.

That is a manufacturing decision with a consequence you feel years later. Because no adhesive locks the arrangement, the firmness you sleep on is not a number set at the factory and inherited for a decade. If your back changes, and after enough years at a desk it does, the arrangement can change with it.

At the end of the sitting day

None of this undoes a hard chair or a long commute. What a properly zoned surface can do is stop adding to it overnight: let the lower back rest at the depth it actually wants, keep the spine in a line it recognises, and give the heaviest part of you something underneath that pushes back.

That is a smaller claim than most mattresses make. It is also the part that happens every night, whether or not anyone writes it down.
